Trust staff member recognised with award after saving neighbour’s life

20 February 2023

Mary Beech[COTM].JPGA member of staff at East Cheshire NHS Trust has been recognised with an award after saving a neighbour’s life whilst at home.

Mary Beech, who works at Macclesfield District General Hospital as a Simulation Clinical Skills Technician, was awarded Colleague of the Month for her swift actions after her neighbour had become unresponsive and stopped breathing whilst visiting her house.

Quick to act, Mary started CPR and the lady began to respond by the time the ambulance arrived.

The ambulance service took over the care of the unwell lady, but thanks to Mary’s quick response, her neighbour survived.

Although the neighbour was not a Macclesfield resident and Mary is not a clinical member of staff, she was quick to act using skills that she has been exposed to whilst working at the Clinical and Professional Development Centre and her actions meant that her neighbour made a full recovery.

After receiving the award, Mary said: “I'm obviously thrilled to be given the award.

“We see it so often at work with the Basic Life Support (BLS), but it was something I didn't really think about, instinct took over and I just jumped in and did it and despite having another episode, my neighbour is now doing really well."
