Patients and staff take part in centenary celebrations as Congleton War Memorial Hospital turns 100

23 May 2024

Staff and patients were at the heart of the celebrations as Congleton War Memorial Hospital marked its 100th anniversary.

A small event was hosted on Wednesday 22nd May on the Aston Unit at the hospital, with staff, patients, relatives, volunteers and guests marking the momentous milestone.

Senior Sister on the ward, Jo Hodgkinson said: “The event was a chance to recognise and mark the past ten decades. We are a community hospital and it’s been fantastic to celebrate such a special occasion.

“I speak as a the very proud leader of the Aston Unit; the staff have put a lot of effort and time into making the event a success and they do it because they are proud to work here.”

Alongside a stunning singing performance from District Nurse, Isla Roberts, patients and guests were also treated to Bollywood style dance from staff on the ward, which was choreographed by the international nurses who work on the unit.

Shirley Jones was one of the staff members who took part in the dance and added: “We had great fun working on the dance, it’s been hard, but it was very much worth it.

“The main message from the dance was to showcase and celebrate the fantastic work of our international nurses. A 100 years ago, the workforce would have been sourced from the local population but nowadays our workforce is truly multi-cultural, and all are welcome here.

“They aren’t just international nurses to us; they are our colleagues and friends and we could not do it without them.”

Prior to the event, staff were also treated to a surprise message of thanks from Chief Nurse for England, Dame Ruth May which can be watched below.

Congleton Town Council are also celebrating the contribution of the hospital with their own ‘Picnic in the Park’ event in Congleton Park on Monday 27th May (12pm- 5pm).

The 1920s-themed event will commemorate 100 years of the hospital and will be filled with live music, a 1920s swing band, traditional games and much more.

Meanwhile, East Cheshire NHS Charity recently launched its ‘Wellbeing Appeal’ to improve the wellbeing of staff, volunteers and patients at the hospital through a range of initiatives.
