This year International Women's Day (IWD), which has been around for more than a century, falls on Saturday, 8 March, and the Trusts Non-Executive Directors have pledged their support for the event.
The board discussed the importance of International Women's Day during their recent board meeting and made individual pledges to support the day’s aims and objectives.
On International Women's Day, people across the world come together to celebrate the achievements of women and seek to raise awareness of discrimination and encourage action to create gender parity. This year’s theme - accelerate action - emphasises the importance of taking swift and decisive steps to address the barriers women face, both personally and professionally.
Aislinn O’Dwyer, Chair, said: “We’re proud that 81% of our colleagues at East Cheshire NHS Trust are female, and we recognise that great strides have been made in the drive for gender parity, but there’s still more to be done.
“I was particularly taken by this year's theme, accelerate action, because as board members we’re able to do just that in a number of ways, such as celebrating women’s achievements by recognising the important contribution women have made in various fields, throughout history and in the present day.
“And it’s important to shine a light on issues like the gender pay gap, unequal access to opportunities and services, and gender-based violence in society.
“Just by having discussions about these issues makes us think about what we can do as individuals, and as a Trust, to mobilise action for gender equality.”
