East Cheshire NHS Trust teams celebrate success at the Greater Manchester Health and Care Research Awards

17 October 2022

A huge congratulations to East Cheshire NHS Trust’s Research Team and Community Midwives who were recognised for their fantastic work at the 2022 Greater Manchester Clinical Research Awards, held recently at The Etihad Stadium in Manchester.

The Research Team were winners of ‘Outstanding Achievement by a Team – Ways of Working’ and the trust’s Community Midwives were runners up in the ‘Putting Participants First’ category.

The local research community gathered for the ceremony hosted by the NIHR Clinical Research Network Greater Manchester at the end of September.

There were winners from across Greater Manchester and East Lancashire, as well as East Cheshire NHS Trust, which recognised the achievements of teams and individuals who delivered, or enabled the delivery of, high quality research during 2021/22.

The ceremony began with a keynote speech from Sir Richard Leese, Chairman of Greater Manchester’s new NHS Integrated Care Board. Winners were then announced in 12 different categories, including the award for Outstanding Achievement by a Team - Ways of Working.

This category recognised outstanding achievement by a research team, whether they have achieved outstanding results, made an exceptional contribution toward efficiency and effectiveness of operations, a special effort in promoting portfolio research or an outstanding service to the research community.

Natalie Keenan, Lead Research Nurse at East Cheshire NHS Trust, said: “As a team we are delighted to have won this award. After responding to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, our ambition is to now grow our research delivery even further.”

Natalie said the research team continue to work collaboratively with different departments across the trust including pharmacy, radiology, pathology and finance, with the shared goal of driving research forward to provide a quality research experience to a higher proportion of its patients.

Ged Murphy, Chief Executive at East Cheshire NHS Trust, said: “Many congratulations to our research team on this fantastic award win, which celebrates the best of clinical research in the region.

“Clinical research provides such important evidence which could improve future patient care and I know the team work really hard to promote research across the trust, which has led to an increase in the number of areas now being actively involved.

“A huge well done also to our community midwives who were named runners up in the ‘Putting Participants First’ category.”

At the beginning of 2022, the research team were given the green light to proceed with the ‘Assets-based feeding help Before and After birth’ (ABA) study.  Working collaboratively with the trust’s community midwives allowed the team to be able to offer the study to women within East Cheshire and bring research to a new clinical area within the Trust.

This collaboration meant East Cheshire NHS Trust was the second highest recruiter to the ABA study and they now have 57 participants.

Natalie added: “The community midwives were very receptive of the study and have been an important link in allowing women access to the research, as without their support, we would not have been able to able to offer this opportunity to so many.”
