Congleton’s communities gather to celebrate centenary year of Congleton War Memorial Hospital

29 May 2024

HundredDSC_0489.jpgs of people gathered on Bank Holiday Monday at Congleton Park to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Congleton War Memorial Hospital.

The weather couldn’t spoil the 1920s-themed event, which was hosted by Congleton Town Council and commemorated the centenary of the beloved site that has served the town for 100 years.

A vibrant mix of activities were on hand to transport people back to the twenties, with fabulous musical performances from Silk Brass Band and Swing Band, Swingamathing.

Staff from Aston Unit at the hospital were also dressed in nursing uniforms from decades gone by, whilst East Cheshire NHS Charity showcased the opportunity to the public to learn more about its Wellbeing Appeal, which is raising monies to provide ways of improving the wellbeing of patients, staff and volunteers.

East Cheshire NHS Trust Chief Executive, Ged Murphy also made an appearance and thanked crowds for supporting their local community hospital. He said: “A huge thank you to the people of Congleton for supporting the hospital at today’s event.

“It’s a massive part of the community which we are fully aware of, and we look forward to opening the new Community Diagnostics Centre on the site very soon.”

Kay Wesley, who was recently appointed the new Mayor of Congleton added: “A huge thanks to everyone that came down to join the celebration of our War Memorial Hospital's 100th birthday.

“The hospital is such a central part of all our lives and when I asked, lots of people there put their hands up to say they were born in the hospital, and I certainly have used its services many times for my family from birth to old age. We are very lucky to have it.”
