Safe Critically Ill Transfer Training (SCITT)

Who should attend
This nationally recognised one day course is jointly commissioned by the North West Critical Care Networks and endorsed by the North West Deanery. It is aimed at registered clinicians who have a role or responsibility in the preparation, packaging and movement of critically ill adults from Emergency Departments, Theatres, Intensive Care Units or Coronary Care.

It is specifically aimed at NMC Registered Nurses, Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs), Paramedics, Trainee Anaesthetists and Doctors (CMT level).

What will I learn
Critically ill patients are extremely vulnerable and this can create a number of challenges when delivering care and treatment. The nature and severity of illness require advanced technology and equipment to support and preserve life which can only be provided in Level 2 or Level 3 Critical Care facilities. During critical illness, a patient will often require transfer to other organisations for specialist care. Transferring critically ill patients requires clinicians with a robust knowledge base, situational awareness and a portfolio of clinical competencies to maintain and reduce the risk of avoidable harm.

The SCITT programme is practical, interactive and simulation-based training. It will provide the learner with the theory, knowledge and clinical skills to ensure that critical care is maintained to the highest of standards during any transfer, and any new or emerging situations will be anticipated, identified and managed appropriately.

Course Content

The SCITT programme focuses on:

  • Transfer governance
  • Risk management
  • Pre-transfer stabilisation
  • Transfer process management (communication, command and control)
  • Human factors and situational awareness

To support the learner, the programme consists of three core assessment components:
